Child Support

Did you know? Child support is payable by one or both parents to the other and is calculated according to the Child Support Guidelines

Child support is intended to contribute towards the expenses incurred by and for the child

What Is Child Support?

In Ontario, child support is the financial contribution one parent pays to the other to help cover the costs of raising their child after a separation or divorce. It is the child’s legal right, and the amount is determined primarily by the Federal Child Support Guidelines.

Child support generally includes two parts:

  1. Basic (Table) Support
    • Covers the child’s basic needs such as food, clothing, housing, and everyday expenses.
    • Calculated based on the paying parent’s income and the number of children.
  2. Special or Extraordinary Expenses (Section 7 Expenses)
    • Covers additional costs like daycare, extracurricular activities, medical or dental expenses not covered by insurance, and post‑secondary education.

Child support is separate from parenting time or decision‑making responsibility (custody). Even if a parent does not see the child regularly, they may still be required to pay support.

At Mahin Law, we help parents calculate, negotiate, and enforce child support arrangements to ensure your child’s financial needs are met and that the agreement complies with Ontario law.
